the commentary

Taylor made a surprise appearance at Disney’s offices for a screening of Toy Story 5. While there was no performance of her original song “I Knew It, I Knew You” she was on hand for a moderated conversation and Q&A. Events like these are a key way to build award show buzz. “I Knew It” continues to be a frontrunner for the Best Original Song category at the Oscars and would be Taylor’s first Academy Award nomination should she clinch it.

Taylor went streamlined in all black but she opted to make things more interesting by mixing materials. One of my personal styling tricks to elevate a monochrome palette. After much staring at seams and cuts and ribbing, these are my best guesses at her ensemble. She looked to pair a soft cashmere Gabriela Hearst sweater with an edgier leather skirt by Nour Hammour alongside a uniquely-cut pair of pointed slingbacks. That notched vamp is such a fun detail! (And when/if they’re found, a post will go live!)

My first thought upon seeing this look, and contextualizing it for the event it was styled for, was how desaturated it is compared to the colorful looks Taylor opted for to wear to the film’s premiere. Those dresses were playful and fun; apt choices to wear in support of a family-friendly film with such a vivid visual world. Upon reflection, I wondered if the choice was intended to offer a more professional visual cue. After all, a push for the Oscar is serious business! Taylor wore a similar business-like neutral outfit - black polo, sensible grey trousers - for the 20/20 interview series marking 30 years of Toy Story.

This is a look I would personally copy + paste. Not just for the all black (though my neutral-loving heart!) but for the very chic styling that balances sleekness and warmth.
