the commentary
Another designer whom you may recognize. Taylor wore one of their glittering rompers to the 2022 American Music Awards.
This particular collection, Fall/Winter 2024, is titled Fuego and was inspired by latin flair. Incorporating the “glimmer, drama, rebellion, and allure” of latin divas like Selena Quintanilla and Celia Cruz. The collection followed many of the recognizable requisites of The Blonds: embellishment and sensual appeal. But it was also a celebration of their past.
Creative Director David Blond described the process of putting the collection together as a “mining” of pieces from The Blonds’ archive. He said, “We went through almost every piece we have and rediscovered things we’ve done in the past that we want to revisit.” From what I can discern, Showgirl represents the first page of a fresh chapter in Taylor’s book. The celebration of the Eras era and all of its success in tracing over the iconic visuals and songs of her nearly 20 year discography is firmly in the rear view. The re-records project has found a surprising and joyous ending in the acquisition of her life’s work. From what Taylor described of Showgirl’s music — “a complete 180 of Tortured Poets” set to a backdrop of “melodies so infectious you’re almost angry at it” — much like this look, this is an album from the sonic and visual perspective of a life on the other side of revisiting her own archive. And boy does it look good.
