The Life of a Showgirl

the commentary
Originally part of The Life of a Showgirl album imagery, this photo went on to become the cover art for Showgirl’s second single: “Opalite.” To me, even prior to the decision to make this the cover, this photo felt particularly “Opalite” to my eye. The movement. The lightness. The feeling of loose, joyful, freedom and comfort in one’s body.
At first, I thought this piece might be from another The Blonds runway. Taylor wears other sculptural pieces by them, including a bodysuit that appears to feature similar 3D embellished “spikes” - but it’s actually from an older Zuhair Murad couture collection, specifically the opening look from Murad’s Spring 2021 offering. That particular collection was, by the designer’s own description, one of the most “emotionally charged” he had ever put out. He described how the pieces were “above all intended as a message of hope.” What a beautiful sentiment to apply here when “Opalite” is very much about the results of resilience and not only finding joy - but actively choosing it.
