Oh how this reminded me of my own high school dances / formal events. Delightfully retro.
One of my favourite aspects of the video is how every scene felt familiar, funny, and classically Taylor. There was so much charm on the surface, but deeper meanings imbued throughout that have been fun to parse. The scenes with Taylor’s “pet rock” were such a contrast to the lighthearted lift of the second half of the video. So much effort exerted with not a lot in return.
This might be a reach on my part, but I also felt a few lyrical references to Taylor’s past work in this particular outfit. The string she attempted to wrap around herself (“invisible string”). The seat she saved at every table (“Lover”). These are the Easter Eggs, nods to existing work, that I find fun to potentially interpret.
