the commentary

Ever the enjoyer of wearing her own merch, Taylor released new behind-the-scenes footage of her directing on set wearing the orange The Life of a Showgirl cardigan which is available as a limited edition box set with the Life of a Showgirl CD.

My eyes definitely zoomed in on Taylor’s choice of words in linking out to the merch “On The Job.” It feels like a verbal reference to Taylor’s repeated role as director and perhaps even a nod to the “peek behind the curtain” that she’s positioned the album to be, revealing her life off stage and off work.

I personally like the extension of the cardigan merch beyond its original folklore world it was introduced in. It feels like her “signature” merch item now and it’s a fun way to visually tie all the eras together, making them recognizably from one artist, while honouring how each are their own distinct body of work. I will say that much as I love the orange colour and that the glittery thread is a great nod to the glimmer of the showgirl aesthetic we’ve seen, I know my first thought upon seeing this new cardigan was “itchy!”

For those who will remember, we’ve seen Taylor model her own merch on a number of occasions. From music videos (“Anti-Hero” and “You Need To Calm Down” as two examples) to fan meet and greets to even street style moments.
