the commentary
It’s nice in a lot of ways that this tender, stripped down moment in Taylor’s set that’s dedicated entirely to her roots as a singer-songwriter brings with it two very familiar names.
The first being Taylor Guitars, the instrument brand that Taylor first entered the scene playing. This particular 6-string features the same koa wood that was her signature as a teenager, in addition to some byzantine inlays and a Florentine cutaway — just as her first guitars from this brand had.
The second, of course, being the wonderful Jessica Jones who was Taylor’s main costumer for both the 1989 and reputation Tours. I had noted that this was the one outfit of her entire tour wardrobe that stood out the most to me as unlike the others - and now we know why. It’s a joy to see her credited again as part of Taylor’s tour.
You’ll also notice in these shots the sparkle of her Roberto Cavalli two piece, worn during the previous 1989 section. It’s another smart move when it comes to efficient layered dressing for quick changes as Taylor can simply pop this dress on top of her clothes - coordinated to be tonally consistent - and the ruffled slit still means the sparkles get to catch the light on stage.
It’s brilliant.
This particular guitar I’ve talked about a lot over the years and is the most nostalgic in Taylor’s guitar collection. While this is a new version of it (you can tell by the application of the wood on the guitar’s face), Taylor retained all the signature customizations she made to the koa wood series she owned as a teenager that make it very distinctive as hers including the byzantine inlays on the neck and a Florentine cutaway.
